Goodbye, complicated applications for San Rafael public art projects. Instead, among many initiatives to improve cultural equity and access to the arts, the city aims to make the public art approval process as easy as possible by forming the Pilot Public Art Advisory Group, with the help of the San Rafael Social Justice Community Art Group.
The shift came just in time for a few important projects to get started, one of which councilwoman Maika Llorens Gulati is especially excited about. Through a collaborative effort by the county, city of San Rafael, local businesses, and artists and community members, the Canal neighborhood will soon be receiving a mural. “Now more than ever we need inspiration and strength,” Gulati says. “And this project is a celebration of our diverse cultures and identities, empowering our neighborhood and adding cultural and economic vitality.”
