Two Mill Valley authors, Deborah Huber and Willow Older, have embraced the power of noticing everyday moments, and they’re sharing the practice with the world through their illustrated journal, Today I Noticed: A Little Book of Mindfulness That Will Change the Way You See the World (Blue Star Press with Penguin Random House). Available at Book Passage, The Depot, Two Neat and Copperfield’s Books.

Can you tell us a little bit about the book?
Huber: It’s a collection of our observations that remind us to appreciate the little moments that often slip by unnoticed. The book includes blank pages so readers can also record their own observations and experience the joy of creative expression.

What inspired your approach to mindfulness?
Older: The idea for Today I Noticed project came to us, ironically, because Deborah and I weren’t paying attention. Five years ago (2018), on a Wednesday, we headed to SFMOMA. We were so pleased because we were first in line. We stood there for a few minutes before realizing MOMA is closed on Wednesdays … which we’d have known if we’d been paying attention. Instead of going home, we decided to explore downtown San Francisco. And we gave ourselves an assignment: let’s notice what’s going on around us and see what happens.

Why is mindfulness so important to you?
Huber: We live in challenging, often overwhelming times. Mindfulness is a powerful way to access more gratitude and joy, no matter what’s going on around or within us.
