The increasing number of whales struck and killed by ships on the West Coast has led to the creation of Whale Safe, an artificial intelligence–powered detection system. Now in operation around the San Francisco Bay, Whale Safe with its near-real-time data can inform large ships when whales are nearby, giving captains the chance to shift course or slow their approach.
