Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Sandra Day O’Connor’s stories at the height of their power take center stage in this new musical.

MTC’s recent Mellon National Playwright in Residence Lauren Gunderson returns, partnering with award-winning composer/lyricist duo Bree Lowdermilk and Kait Kerrigan to present a new version of their groundbreaking continued-world-premiere JUSTICE: A NEW MUSICAL. The piece features the “firsts” of the Supreme Court justices. In an intimate, epic new musical built with sweeping songs, urgent conversations about equality and deeply relatable heroines, JUSTICE explores the first women on the U.S. Supreme Court — Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Sonia Sotomayor — at the height of their power. Following the fraught confirmation process of Justice Sotomayor, we uncover the true sisterhood of these three iconic Americans as they inspire, challenge and usher in the next generation of change makers and trailblazers in American jurisprudence, while fighting private battles of their own. They confront and comfort each other about equal justice under the law, legal strategy, civic responsibility, as well as husbands, motherhood, kids, dreams and sorrows, all while setting a new course for our country and the world.

From the lace collar to hoop earrings to a neck scarf draped toward the bench itself, these three icons of American history are recognizable even in outline, but MTC’s musical hopes to flesh them out through song and help us know their power in humanity through storytelling. The three actresses bringing these characters to life include Lynda DiVito, Stephanie Prentice and Karen Murphy. In the rehearsal room, the women belt out fierce notes and draw listeners in through intimate harmonies and lyrical questions.

This is the perfect way to step into the lives of these women who led through their decisions and statements for the public. Audiences will be moved by the glimpse behind the scenes as we see — and hear — the paths they took to reach each of their decisions in the court and in their own lives.

Don’t miss the opportunity to transport yourself into the room with Justices Ginsburg, Sotomayor and O’Connor. With Gunderson, Lowdermilk + Kerrigan at the creative helm, its a guarantee from lights up to curtain.
