In keeping with the county’s robust conservation history, preservation of natural landscapes continues to be a popular idea in Marin. Save the Redwoods League recently announced a $15 million deal to purchase 1,624 acres of redwoods and coastal meadows near Fort Ross State Historic Park. This move would expand the protected lands around the site by 50 percent. Open space advocates have worked with the town of Fairfax to complete the purchase of the 100-acre Wall property. Some in the community are resistant to the idea, preferring the land be used to address a housing shortage. The Martha Co. property in Tiburon is now officially open to the public after the Marin County Open Space District closed escrow on its $42.1 million purchase of the popular hiking spot. Funding came from bonds, individuals, community foundations and Tiburon and Belvedere.
