California’s Next Dark Sky Designation Might Be in Marin

DarkSky West Marin is set to apply to DarkSky International for designation. A key step in the process is getting the county to pass an ordinance to reduce light pollution. “The ability to view the night sky in this biodiversity hot spot has diminished by 7 percent per year, and DarkSky West Marin wants to fix that,” says Peggy Day, co-facilitator of DarkSky West Marin. “Fixing light pollution and preventing 99 percent of lighting from escaping into outer space will save birds, reptiles, mammals and insects now struggling to feed, migrate and mate.”
